PRC Ultrasound Technologist, Kris Childs (RDMS, RDCS, RVS)
Over 30 years ago, Kris Childs began her dedicated career as an ultrasound technologist when the field of ultrasound was just emerging in the tri-state area. The past three decades have provided Ms. Childs many opportunities to expand her knowledge in multiple areas, allowing her to further develop her ultrasound skills. A native of West Virginia, Ms. Childs has worked in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Kansas. She recently returned from the Midwest to manage and serve as the ultrasound manager and senior technologist for Performance Results Corporation (PRC) Ultrasound Division, Morgantown's newest and most up-to-date 3D/4D imaging service provider.
Ms. Childs graduated from the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Radiologic Technology in 1976, with the intention of becoming an X-ray technician. Ultrasound was an up-and-coming technology, and Ms. Childs, who was interested in new opportunities, appreciated the safety aspect of ultrasound and the innovative approach to imaging the body. The following year, she graduated from the WVU School of Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology as a member of its second graduating class. Ms. Childs took her national boards and obtained her Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification in 1977. In 1979, she obtained her Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) certification, and in 2008, she became certified as a Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS).
After graduation in 1977, Ms. Childs accepted employment as the sole registered ultrasound technologist at the Washington Hospital: Department of Ultrasound in Washington, PA. There she spent the next 27 years performing various ultrasound exams, including abdominal, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN), echocardiograms, vascular, and small-part anatomical imaging. During her tenure, she was promoted to Senior Technologist/Team Leader of a staff of 11 sonographers, providing general direction and organization of the ultrasound department.
Ms. Childs next directed her skills toward Morgantown, WV, where she worked as Imaging Director for Heiskell, King, Burns, & Tallman Surgical Associates. She coordinated technologist work schedules and again performed multiple imaging services. In addition, Ms. Childs performed imaging services with Associate Affiliates Monongalia General and Health South, and traveled to Elkins and Grafton, WV to provide portable imaging services.
In 2006, her husband's career path took the family to Aspen, CO, where Ms. Childs accepted a position as an ultrasound technologist for Aspen Valley Hospital, an award-winning facility for patient satisfaction. Ms. Childs worked all aspects of ultrasound and gained experience imaging extensive emergency room trauma, including a large number of abdomen trauma from skiing accidents. She also performed echocardiograms, vascular, abdominal, pelvic, and small-part imaging.
A year later, her husband was relocated to Wichita, Kansas where Ms. Childs found work as a registered vascular specialist at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital. For the next three years, Ms. Childs performed ultrasound services in a non-invasive vascular laboratory specializing in high-risk vascular imaging. These services included performing carotid artery and upper and lower extremity arterial and venous dopplers.
In 2010, Ms. Childs returned to where her career started at the Washington Hospital in Washington, PA. Once again she worked in multiple areas of ultrasound. Her performance locations had expanded and now encompassed Washington main hospital, Women's Center, Neighbor Health Center, and the Greene County medical facility.
The field of ultrasound is ever-changing and new, exciting ways to image the interior of the body are always being developed. In 2011, Ms. Childs looked to explore another branch of innovative ultrasound technology through shifting her focus to 3D/4D fetal imaging. She became Ultrasound Manager and senior technologist for PRC Ultrasound, a new division of a flourishing organization in the Morgantown, WV community. In her current position, Ms. Childs oversees daily operations of PRC Ultrasound located at PRC's corporate office location. There she performs 2D and 3D/4D fetal imaging as an elective service for expectant mothers. She also performs non-diagnostic preventative health screenings, which include carotid artery, abdominal aorta, gallbladder, and peripheral arterial disease. Ms. Childs enjoys working in her chosen field and looks forward to expanding her skills with PRC Ultrasound Division.
